Supporters of the Amsterdam football club have been waiting for years, but now the time has finally come. Ajax has presented the new home shirt with the old Ajax logo on it. The shirt is already available, together with the away shirt, at adidas.nl.
The Old Logo
Many Ajax supporters have been pleading for years for the return of the classic Ajax logo, which disappeared from the shirt in 1991 after 63 years. Now, the Dutch champion meets the supporters halfway and the classic Ajax logo will be on the home shirt of the Amsterdammers for one year.
Because this shirt of course refers to Ajax's successful past, it was also three former Ajax players who were central in the campaign video. Sjaak Zwart, Frank Rijkaard and Marco van Basten can be seen in the video where Ajax presented the new shirt. All three have a rich history with Ajax, with great successes in the shirt with the classic logo.
Frank Rijkaard and Marco van Basten won the Europa Cup II in 1987 and Rijkaard won the UEFA Champions League in 1995. Sjaak Zwart, also known as 'Mister Ajax', won three Europa Cup I's, the World Cup for clubs and the European Super Cup in the 463 matches he played.
Not only the logo on the new shirt refers to the classic Ajax jersey. The red strip on the shirt is slightly narrower and the numbers on the back also have a classic look. In the Eredivisie Ajax will play without the players names on the back. The three stars, which are normally above the logo, can be seen in the neck. Furthermore, the three stripes of adidas can be seen on the shoulders together with the logo on the chest.
The away shirt
Besides the home shirt, also the away shirt is already available at adidas.nl. This shirt has the modern Ajax logo with dark and light blue horizontal stripes and green details. There are also rumours of a third shirt inspired by Bob Marley. However, these rumours have not yet been confirmed by adidas or Ajax.
Both the home and away shirt of Ajax are now available at adidas. Check out the button below to shop it.
