The Ultimate ASICS Gel-Lyte V FAQ

The History of the ASICS Gel-Lyte V

The ASICS Gel-Lyte V debuted in 1993, part of ASICS' Gel-Lyte series that merged serious running performance with lightweight, modern design. The Gel-Lyte V introduced a sleeker silhouette than the Gel-Lyte III and IV, with refined materials including breathable mesh and suede or leather overlays, a GEL cushioning system in the heel, a TRUSSTIC stability system underfoot and a MONO-SOCK inner sleeve for improved comfort and fit.

Designed not only as a performance runner but as a stylish, versatile shoe, it appealed to both athletes and everyday wearers. Less bulky, more streamlined, the silhouette was clean and aerodynamic, and around 2013, it was reintroduced by ASICS as part of its SportStyle and Heritage lines.

Capitalising on the trend for retro runners and 90's nostalgia, the Gel-Lyte V transitioned to a lifestyle and fashion staple.

Its popularity picked up momentum through limited releases, collaborations, and creative re-designs. Releases with labels and designers like HAL Studios, Bait, COMME des GARÇONS, Concepts, Kith and Sneaker Freaker brought fresh colorways to the model, and it became an essential part of the sneaker scene.

ASICS Gel-Lyte V: Answering Your Questions

Are ASICS Gel-Lyte V good for running?

The Gel-Lyte V has running shoe origins, but today is intended more for lifestyle use. It can be used for light jogging, casual runs, and walking, but it's not optimised for serious running, and lacks the support and stability other ASICS models provide.

How do ASICS Gel-Lyte V fit?

The Gel-Lyte V has a snug, narrow fit, so you might consider sizing up half a size if you have wider feet.

How do you clean ASICS Gel-Lyte V?

Cleaning sneakers should always be done by hand. Here's how:

  • Remove the laces and use a soft brush (like a toothbrush) to get rid of loose dirt.
  • Mix a bit of mild detergent with water, and use a sponge or cloth to gently scrub away marks.
  • For suede, use a suede brush (water can damage suede).
  • Wipe down with a damp cloth and allow the sneakers to air-dry.

If your sneakers have an odour, sprinkle a bit of baking soda inside and leave it overnight. Shake it out the next day. Alternatively, silica gel or activated charcoal bags work just as well to absorb moisture and neutralise odour.

Laces can be washed separately using detergent, or bright white laces can be soaked briefly in a 1:5 bleach-to-water solution - just rinse thoroughly afterward.

Avoid using the washing machine, especially for leather or suede models, as this can cause damage. Even canvas or fabric versions are at risk, so stick to hand-cleaning where possible.
