Nike’s legacy as a global leader in athletic footwear began in 1964, founded by Bill Bowerman and Phil Knight under the name Blue Ribbon Sports. Originally a distributor for Onitsuka Tiger, the company soon rebranded to Nike and launched what would become known as the Cortez.
In 1978, Nike introduced the Air Tailwind, debuting its now-famous air cushioning technology. This breakthrough paved the way for the Air Max series, starting with the Air Max 1 in 1987, designed by Tinker Hatfield. Its visible Air unit changed sneaker design forever.
The brand was defined by its innovation and powerful cultural moments throughout the 80s and 90s, as well as through high-profile endorsements with athletes like Michael Jordan, Serena Williams, and Cristiano Ronaldo.
Today, Nike continues to lead with a blend of performance technology, iconic design, and cultural relevance.
