New Balance Introduces the ABZORB 1890 in 'Faded Black & Utility Green'

After the release of the Action Bronson x New Balance 1890 'Hornet Tusk' and 'Cyborg Tears' in February 2026, New Balance is now releasing its new silhouette in the first general release colorway. The brand continues to expand its lifestyle portfolio with the introduction of the ABZORB 1890.

This new design is once again deeply rooted in the brand's history, yet speaks a completely new design language. The sneaker pays homage to technical innovation, combining iconic sole elements with a progressive upper.

The Design: A Hybrid of Performance and Lifestyle

While many new New Balance models often rely on direct retro trends, the ABZORB 1890 is positioned more as a "playful exploration of visible technology." It is the result of merging two classics that might be well known to performance enthusiasts.

The foundation of the ABZORB 1890 is the original sole unit of the New Balance 2002. It features the proven full-length SBS ABZORB cushioning.

For the upper, the design team, led by Lead Designer James Lee, drew inspiration from the 890v3, a performance running shoe that dominated the market over a decade ago. The most striking feature is the wave-like no-sew pattern (seamless overlays) layered over open-cell mesh. This gives the shoe a dynamic and fluid look.

"The goal was to strike the right balance – creating something that feels modern and compelling while still staying authentic."

explains James Lee.

For him, the 1890 represents a full-circle moment: he used to run in the 890v3 himself when it was still a dedicated performance shoe on the market.

Debut Colorway: 'Faded Black / Utility Green'

The New Balance 1890 'Faded Black & Utility Green' colorway comes with a mix of Faded Black and tactical accents in Utility Green that emphasise the sneaker’s technical character. The material blend of mesh and synthetic elements ensures the high-quality feel expected from the Boston-based brand.

With the 1890, New Balance once again proves its mastery in not just copying its archives, but reinterpreting them for today's streetwear culture through innovative combinations.
