It might just be one of the best New Balance releases—at least in my opinion—the 'Protection Pack' from 2021. This pack, also known as 'Refined Future', consisted of three colorways of the 2002R: 'Phantom Black', 'Rain Cloud', and 'Sea Salt', each featuring a distinctive “torn” design.
For everyone who missed out back then—including myself—there’s good news: all three colorways are making a return this year.
The 'Protection Pack' was designed by New Balance designer Yue Wu. In an interview with Complex, he shared that he created the pack with the idea of giving sneakers a worn-in look, encouraging people to actually wear their shoes instead of keeping them pristine. “It’s not collector’s stuff. It’s just a shoe,” Wu said.

According to Wu, 'Protection Pack' isn’t actually the correct name, but it’s hard to change it now since the name has become iconic among sneaker enthusiasts. The comeback of the pack is music to many sneaker lovers’ ears.

The New Balance 2002R will be released in the three original colorways: 'Phantom Black', 'Rain Cloud', and 'Sea Salt'. All three versions feature a mesh upper with suede and torn overlays that highlight the design. The NERGY technology in the sole provides cushioning and comfort, just as we’ve come to expect from New Balance.
