The sneaker-loafer trend shows no signs of peaking just yet. With brands like Converse, Nike, and of course New Balance, a large portion of the "traditional" sneaker giants has already launched a hybrid loafer. One major player, however, was still missing from the lineup: adidas. But that’s about to change with the release of the adidas Handball Spezial Loafer.
The choice of the Handball Spezial didn't come as a surprise to us. The silhouette has been trending for a long time, and with popular colorways like the ‘Earth Strata’, it has built a significant presence in global street style.
A closer look at the adidas Handball Spezial Loafer
From the first images, it’s clear that this half-sneaker, half-loafer is a true hybrid of both worlds. Interestingly, adidas has opted for an upper that bears little resemblance to the original Handball Spezial; the rubber cupsole is the only element we truly recognise in this loafer.
The upper, on the other hand, strongly resembles a classic Penny Loafer. The strap across the top features the iconic small slot, which is precisely the right size for a coin (a penny). The origins of the Penny Loafer lie in Norway, where it was introduced by Norwegian shoemakers in the early 1900s, featuring that signature strap. Later, these loafers were embraced by Ivy League students, who used the penny strap to give their shoes a unique, personal twist.
In addition to the strap, the first images of the adidas Handball Spezial Loafer reveal details like the Three Stripes, which are subtly integrated into the side of the shoe. Finally, we see a shimmering adidas Trefoil logo featured on the strap.
Colorways
The adidas Handball Spezial Loafer is set to launch, for now, in six different colorways. The initial reveal shows beige and grey versions with a gum sole, alongside a sleek black version with a dark brown sole.
A second batch of photos reveals bolder options, including a burgundy red with a dark sole and a dark grey version with the same finish. Last but not least, there is a leopard print iteration featuring pony hair.
