The Nike Air Yeezy 2 is the successor to the Nike Air Yeezy, which first debuted in 2009 in a Zen Grey colorway. Two more colorways for the OG Air Yeezy model were released before the Nike Air Yeezy first appeared in a Black/Solar Red colorway in 2012. This Nike Air Yeezy 2 'Red October' colorway was the third in the series of Air Yeezy 2 models. The Black/Solar Red and Pure Platinum colorways were released simultaneously in June of 2012 with an edition of 5000 pairs per colorway. It wasn't until 2014 that the Red Octobers received a suprise drop exclusively on Nike.com. Kanye West had already left Nike by then.

The upper of the all-red 'Red October' consists almost entirely of mesh. The toebox is trimmed in suede and a synthetic synthetic material with triangular studs replaces the scaly leather found on the previous two releases. Probably the most recognisable feature of the Air Yeezy 2 is the midsole, as it is taken from the classic Nike Air Tech Challenge 2. The knurled heel and strap over the laces are the most distinctive details on the Air Yeezy 2. Furthermore, the laces are finished with gold lace tips.
