The Air Jordan 15, released in 1999, marked a striking and unconventional chapter in the Air Jordan legacy. Designed by Tinker Hatfield, it was the first model introduced after Michael Jordan’s second retirement, symbolising both innovation and transition.
Inspired by the X-15 fighter jet, the shoe’s design reflects a futuristic, aerodynamic aesthetic with sharp lines, woven Kevlar uppers, and a protruding tongue reminiscent of Jordan’s signature on-court style. Technologically, it incorporated Zoom Air cushioning for responsiveness, a hidden speed-lacing system for a streamlined fit, and a carbon fibre midfoot shank for stability.
