The Air Jordan 1 Royal is coming back after almost a decade. Jordan Brand, part of Nike, is doing it right: this black-and-blue classic ties back to one of the most famous photoshoots from Michael Jordan's early career, and the Air Jordan 1 Royal gets its own special box to tell that story.
The blue tone references Jordan's legendary 1985 photoshoot in Oregon, shot by photographer Chuck Kuhn. The most famous image from that session shows Jordan standing alone on an open road, a shot that later became known as the "Flight Guy" photo. Jordan never actually wore this Royal colorway during a game; it stayed tied to this photo series. For the 2026 release, that history is built into the packaging: the box features the original photo on the outside, with extra images from the shoot inside. Extra laces are included too.
Within Air Jordan 1 history, Royal is one of the most referenced colorways from the model's early days. While other early colorways did show up on court, this one always stayed linked to imagery off the court. That makes the return especially interesting for collectors who know the original context.

True to the original
Underneath the box sits the Air Jordan 1 Royal in an Air Jordan 1 High OG build with a black leather upper. The toe box, Swooshes, heel and ankle get Game Royal leather, while textured blue leather also shows up around the collar and heel. The midsole is white, the outsole blue, a color split that stays close to the very first release of this colorway. Jordan Brand goes with the classic High OG build, keeping the familiar collar height, original panel proportions and Nike Air branding on the tongue, rather than the later High '85 cut.
Our take: a solid retro design with real love for the history. It would have been even more fitting with the '85 shape instead of the regular High OG build. But that's a minor detail, overall this one's a definite cop.

The Air Jordan 1 Royal isn't limited to men's sizes. Jordan Brand is reportedly also releasing the colorway in grade school, preschool, toddler and crib sizes, so the whole family can match in the same black-and-blue look.
