In 2007, Nike SB set out to celebrate Halloween with a run of horror-themed Dunks. Freddy Krueger from A Nightmare on Elm Street and Jason Voorhees from Friday the 13th each got their own pair. Only Jason made it to stores: the Freddy Krueger Dunk was pulled just before release over rights issues and has been one of the most sought-after Dunks ever since.
Since then, famous horror icons and franchises have received their own designs from brands like Nike, Jordan, adidas, Reebok and Vans. It doesn't always have to be a horror classic. Characters from films and TV series, or simply the colours and themes surrounding Halloween, such as orange and black, pumpkins, skeletons and spiderwebs, form the basis for Halloween sneakers too.

Today, October is a fixed release window for almost every major brand. This year, Nike Basketball is even giving nearly every signature athlete their own horror theme. The details have stayed recognisable over the years: soles that glow in the dark, blood splatter and nods to classic horror films.

We picked out the Halloween sneakers that have stuck with us the most. Below you'll find fifteen pairs in chronological order.
The best-known Halloween sneakers at a glance
1. Nike SB Dunk Low 'Freddy Krueger' (2007)

A direct tribute to Freddy Krueger from A Nightmare on Elm Street. The red and green stripes stand for his sweater, the brown for his burned skin and the silver Swoosh for his claw glove. That proved too literal: rights issues stopped the release, so this SB Dunk Low only exists as samples.
2. Nike SB Dunk High 'Jason Voorhees' (2007)

Freddy's counterpart from the Horror Pack brings Jason from Friday the 13th to the skatepark. This SB Dunk High did release, with a black upper and dark red like dried blood. A Low version never got past a handful of samples.
3. Nike Air Force 1 'Savage Beast' (2009)

Nike's 2009 Halloween edition is about the beast rather than the killer. Ginger pony hair covers the upper and even the midsole of this Air Force 1, as if a werewolf crawled inside. 'SAVAGE BEAST' is embroidered on the heel.
4. Nike Air Force 1 'Skeleton' (2018)

An X-ray of your own foot: the bone graphic follows the anatomy under the upper. The white Air Force 1 Skeleton hit stores on Halloween 2018 itself and returned in black, orange and purple through 2021.
5. Off-White x Nike Blazer Mid 'Grim Reaper' (2018)

For Halloween 2018, Virgil Abloh released a Spooky Pack with two faces. The black Grim Reaper stands for death itself, the lighter All Hallows Eve with its orange Swoosh for the night of celebration before.
6. Nike SB Dunk Low 'Night of Mischief' (2019)

Few Halloween sneakers are as literally about trick-or-treating as this Dunk Low: 'Trick' and 'Treat' on the heels, purple spiderwebs and a sole that glows in the dark. It hit skate shops first and then dropped online on Halloween itself.
7. Nike Air Force 1 Low 'Shibuya Halloween' (2019)

A nod to Tokyo's Shibuya district, where Halloween turns into a massive street party every year. This Air Force 1 released only in Japan, in orange and black with 'SBY' embroidery.
8. Nike Air Max 95 'Freddy Krueger' (2020)

Nike never called it that, but the sneaker world did. The red and brown stripes on the wavy side panels of this Air Max 95 look so much like Freddy's sweater that the nickname stuck instantly. It released around Halloween 2020.
9. Ghostbusters x Reebok Ghost Smasher (2020)

Ghostsmasher was the original working title of the film Ghostbusters. Reebok used that name for this sneaker, with a removable proton pack on the heel as a nod to its Pump technology and a 'No-Ghost' logo on the tongue.
10. Nike SB Dunk Low 'Mummy' (2021)

Ancient Egypt as a horror theme. Frayed strips of fabric run like bandages across the SB Dunk Low Mummy, the Eye of Horus sits on the tongue and the sole glows in the dark.
11. adidas Forum Low 'Dracula' (2021)

From adidas' Monster Pack. Count Dracula features on the sockliner of this Forum Low, a lace dubrae with silver fangs finishes it off and the red lining leaves little to the imagination.
12. Nike SB Dunk High 'Sweet Tooth' (2023)

Candy is the other side of Halloween. Someone already seems to have taken a bite out of the toe of this SB Dunk High, and the sockliner warns against taking candy from strangers.
13. Nike Air Force 1 'Jack-o'-Lantern' (2023)

The carved pumpkin is Halloween's best-known symbol. This Air Force 1 wears one as a metal dubrae on the laces and repeats the theme on the insole.
14. The Simpsons x adidas Rivalry 'Werewolf Flanders' (2024)

Based on Treehouse of Horror X, in which Ned Flanders turns into a werewolf. Felt panels form the fur on this Rivalry Low, and the insole reads 'I know what you did', a nod to the horror film I Know What You Did Last Summer.
15. Nike KD 18 'Slim Reaper' (2025)

Kevin Durant's Slim Reaper nickname keeps returning as a Halloween theme. On the KD 18, a skeleton hand appears to hold the shoe, and it glows in the dark.
