No longer news to many, but an absolute highlight: Nike has announced that the Nike Air Max 90 'Bacon' will return this year. The meaty design by Dave Ortiz from 2004 will be reissued on this year's Nike Air Max Day. We've been waiting for the official re-release for a long time! DQM x Nike Air Max 90 and the story of 2004
A bit of background first: New York graffiti artist Dave Ortiz owns a sneaker concept store called Dave's Quality Meat. Are you wondering how meat and sneakers go together? Probably not, except that this concept exactly reflects the New Yorker and his art, because Ortiz's graffiti tag is a chicken leg with the name MEAT and a reversed 'E'. His shop was one of the first concept stores in New York.
The artist decorated his entire shop with small details that alluded to his day and thus to meat. A perfect shop window for his products was particularly close to his heart.
In 2004, Nike asked the artist to design a shoe for their label. But at first he had no idea which design he would choose. On Friday evening shortly before the deadline, his stomach growled. He ordered a sandwich with bacon, egg and cheese. Then, when he held it in his hands and wanted to satisfy his hunger, he saw the bacon. It was immediately clear to him: his shoe for Nike would be inspired by bacon, because "everybody loves bacon". The sneaker eventually became one of the most iconic Air Max 90 designs.

Ortiz asked his good friend Chris Keefe, who designs for Supreme among others, for help in choosing the colour of his kicks. The colours should correspond exactly to those of a nice slice of bacon. And it was successful, as we know today!
The 2021 release now looks almost exactly like the original version, with some fans claiming the colours of the new model are brighter. What do you think?
The colours 'Sail' and 'Straw' are the basic colours of the shoe. The leather toe box and suede mudguard are in these colours. The Bordeaux red is also very eye-catching and gives the shoe a real bacon look. The final touches are the light pink details on the tongue, the Nike logo on the heel and of course the Swoosh.
As you may have seen in the pictures, the shoes are packed in a vacuum plastic bag. This special Nike bag comes with the sneakers in their box. In addition, laces in different colours are also included, so you can choose your favourites.
