On 16 July 2021, the New Balance 550 Sea Salt Pack a.k.a. "Premium Pack" will finally be released! The pack contains three colorways: the 'Burgundy/Maroon', 'Black & White' and the 'University Gold'.
The New Balance 550
The New Balance 550 made its debut in 1989 under the name P550. At that time, New Balance was mainly known for their running shoes, but with this new model, NB went in a different direction. The kicks were, in fact, released as basketball shoes at the time. In addition, the 550s did not contain any new technology. For these reasons, the 550 did not become very popular in the United States. What is remarkable is that the model did catch on in Europe.
This low-top silhouette features a simple yet stylish construction: premium smooth and perforated leather upper combined with breathable mesh lining and a rubber sole unit.
The silhouette was reintroduced in 2020 and 2021 by Teddy Santis-led Aimé Leon Dore. ALD has had several collabs with New Balance, including on the 550 model. Since the New Balance 550 emerged from the archives with the help of Aimé Leon Dore, it has become a highly sought-after silhouette.
Santis has a great love for fashion and basketball. Therefore, his vision was to make the kicks popular again:
"Reintroducing the P550 Basketball Oxfords. They were originally released in 1989 and haven’t been touched since. The silhouette has been something of an enigma — almost impossible to find information on it. Took us a couple years and a lot of work to bring this shoe back. Everything about the 550’s and what they represented felt like this would be the perfect romance to activate SONNY and the ALD grassroots basketball program. If you are looking for another sneaker that is comfortable and easy to match, this 'Black & White' colour combination is for you! The black and white shoe can be combined with every outfit. Because of the quiet base, the accents stand out, such as the grey suede toe.
The 'Maroon' colorway on the New Balance 550 model gives the sneaker a real vintage 90's vibe. The base has been given the 'Premium' colour and accents of the red-purple colour have been added.
