The Most Iconic Sports Moments Of The 90s

Many sneaker lovers get a lot of inspiration from sports. Many sneakers started on the basketball court, for example. Especially for Sneakerjagers 90s week, we discuss the most famous and iconic sports moments from the 90s! Which sports moment made a big impact on you?

'The Shot' By Michael Jordan

We take you back to 1989. Michael 'Air' Jordan and his team, Chicago Bulls, are facing the Cleveland Cavaliers. Michael was playing on the Jordan 4, which was not immediately loved by the fans upon its release. It is 99-100 for Cleveland in the last 3 seconds of the game. The tension in the room is palpable. When Michael Jordan gets his hands on the ball in the last 2 seconds, he seizes his opportunity. The ball falls, right at the buzzer, into the basket. The points go down in history as 'The Shot'.

Rugby World Cup 1995

We move on to 1995. The 1995 World Cup match was the first major rugby match after white and black were made equal. It was also the first international rugby match that South Africa participated in. The country played against America and eventually won the World Cup. The moment of the World Cup was immortalised with a picture of Nelson Mandela, the first black president of America, handing the World Cup to the winning team. This photo definitely belongs in our favourite sports moments of the 90s.

Mike Tyson 'The Bite Fight'

Mike Tyson is still a much-quoted name and is known as the most dangerous boxer. In 1997, Tyson faced Evander Holyfield again in the ring. It was the match that all fans had been looking forward to. Mike was disqualified during the match for (partially) biting Holyfield's ear. The disqualification gave Evander Holyfield the WBA heavyweight champion's belt and caused Mike Tyson to lose his boxing licence.

"It's not an excuse, but I was just angry that he boxed so well." Told the ex-boxer later in an interview. The fight is still known as 'The Bite Fight'.

Tiger Woods

We remain in 1997 for a while. The year when golfer Tiger Woods wrote history. He broke a great record at the age of 21. He was 12 strokes ahead of his opponent in the tournament. The previous record was 13, which stood for 135 years. After Woods broke this record, he was called the most famous golfer of all time.

Eldrick 'Tiger' Woods was taught the game by his father and became the best player ever. Now that his success is behind him, it is time to pass on the golf club to his own son.
