In 1972, adidas introduced the new SL 72 model: a shoe that was very suitable for the sport of running with its ultralight midsole. The model was introduced just before the Olympic Games in Munich, Germany, in the same year that adidas received the well-known Trefoil logo. The SL 72 was the first sneaker to receive this logo.
The sneaker was one of the most revolutionary models of the time. The SL 72 model soon appeared at the feet of athletes looking for agility on the track. The sneaker was also embraced in the streetwear scene. The sleek silhouette and eye-catching adidas logo did well with sneaker lovers around the world, and even was seen on the feet of Bob Marley.
Bob Marley
Robert Nesta (Bob) Marley, better known as Bob Marley, was a Jamaican reggae artist. Marley is nicknamed The King of Reggae, and for good reason. Songs such as "Could You Be Loved," "Jamming" and "Three Little Birds" are anno 2024 still the most famous reggae songs of all time.
Marley was particularly popular in the 1970s and was also regularly seen wearing the adidas sneaker during that time. A sneaker that, with its sleek, contemporary design, suited the singer's casual look well. Marley died of cancer in 1981. Over the years, adidas has released several sneakers in tribute to Marley.
In 2008, adidas teamed up with Marley's famous record label Tuff Gong for a special collab. Also in 2021, adidas launched the adidas Samba in collaboration with soccer club AFC Ajax, dressed in a reggae colorway. In 2024, the artist will finally get an official collab with adidas. In the coming months, the Bob Marley x adidas SL 72 'Black' is expected.
Recent releases
In addition, several colorways of the adidas SL 72 have already appeared in recent months. In particular, the iconic 'Green,' 'Indigo' and 'Utility Yellow' colorways did well and were received with open arms. British brand Wales Bonner, led by Grace Wales Bonner, also came out with two colorways of the SL 72 silhouette in 2023: the Knit 'Deep Brown' and 'Team Green'.
