On January 13, 2023, adidas dropped the Y-3 Spring/Summer 2023 Chapter 1 collection. The Y-3 line, led by Yohji Yamato, is characterized by innovative and durable designs. The Spring/Summer 2023 collection is no exception and comes with footwear and apparel items designed with innovation in mind.
Y-3 Spring/Summer 2023 Chapter 1
In 2022, Y-3 boldly celebrated its 20-year partnership with adidas. The line did this by reintroducing old, classic silhouettes from the long-standing collaboration. The adidas Y-3 line is led by Japanese fashion designer Yohji Yamamoto. The designer is known for his avant-garde creations in which the color black takes center stage.
In the new Y-3 collection, Yamamoto takes inspiration from the concept of 'Artisan Codes of Sport' and combines sport silhouettes with elegant elements in a series of bold garments, shoes, and accessories. Based on adidas' athletic heritage, the collection includes letterman jackets, track pants, cargo pants, shirts, vests, and various accessories.
The sporty apparel items have the high-end fashion DNA of Yamamoto's designs, resulting in modern-looking garments. The collection comes with items for women and men and provides a number of unisex silhouettes.
Footwear
The Y-3 Spring/Summer 2023 Chapter 1 footwear collection features a selection of classic adidas silhouettes. The Superstar, Gazelle, Rivalry, Runner 4D Halo, Hicho, and the Marathon T3 models have each been uniquely designed in Y-3's signature style. The sneakers pay homage to Japanese technology, the Sashiko stitching.
This Sashiko stitching is a traditional method used in Japanese culture to reinforce or repair clothing. Today, this technique is also used to decorate clothing, as is done in the Y-3 collection. The Y-3 Supterstar, Y-3 Hicho, Y-3 Marathon TR, and Y-3 Gazelle all come with the Sashiko stitching. In the designs, the threads of the stitching run throughout the silhouette.
The other sneakers in the Y-3 collection feature sleek designs and come in beige and black colorways. Each sneaker features the Y-3 logo, which appears on the heel and on the midsole in some models, such as the Rivalry. The adidas Y-3 Shiku Run has a beige upper that is made of mesh. The black cords that run throughout the design give the sneaker a playful twist.
Campaign
The drop of the Y-3 Spring/Summer 2023 Chapter 1 collection comes with an accompanying campaign. Shot by Jiro Konami and Emily Okuda-Overhoff, this campaign is set primarily in Japan. With evocative nods, it hints at the country's rich heritage in streetwear photography. The cast of models embodies Yohji's rebellious spirit and is captured in various spots of Tokyo.
The dynamic images from the campaign fit well with the style of the Y-3 collection. The fluid array of dynamic movements in the shots pays homage to the visceral Japanese dance form Butoh.
