Stepping Stones for the Nike Air Force 1 'Summer of Sports'

Are you glued to the TV, cheering on all the athletes who are doing their best, or did you not know that the Olympic Games are currently taking place in Tokyo? I don't really follow the Games myself, even though I have the greatest respect for all the athletes and their performance amazes me. In honour of the Games and the athletes Nike are releasing a 'Summer of Sports' pack, including two colorways of the Air Force 1.

The Nike Air Force 1 'Summer of Sports' - Black Swoosh and Green Swoosh will launch on Thursday, 05 August 2021 at 09:00. Check out the button for retailers:

Intertwined Swooshes and Olympic colours, that's what jumps right out at you with the two new Nike Air Force 1s. The silhouette has the same basketball-inspired performance features of the OG, of course, while adding fresh design details for a modern look.

As mentioned, the leather upper features multiple Swoosh graphics and bold colour accents. Together, both models feature all five colours of the Olympic rings.

In addition to the two Air Force 1s, other kicks are being released, each in green and black colorways. The next model in the multi-swoosh collection is the Nike Waffle One.

The Waffle has a white lightweight mesh upper complemented by soft grey suede laces and overlays at the toe and heel. Shining in full Olympic glory are the aforementioned mini swooshes. The silhouette's signature stacked sole design comes in a bold white and is finished off with a black waffle outsole.

You can also find two Nike React Vision in our release calendar:

The popular Air Max TN silhouette continues. Once in a classic and also in the 3 variant.

Finally, there's the classic Blazer Mid '77, which has a smooth white leather upper with a matching toe overlay. Of course, you'll find the contrasting Swooshes here too.

There is also a small embroidered Swoosh in white on the back foot. Further blue accents can be found on the tongue label and the leather tab on the heel. As expected, a white rubber sole completes the refreshing style.

Why are there five rings? They are the symbol of the Olympic Games and were designed by Pierre de Coubertin in 1913. At that time, the Swiss revived the Games after a break of almost 1500 years. The five rings each stand for a continent, their colours blue, yellow, black, green and red were all colours found in national flags at the time. No colour is assigned to a continent!

As the 1916 Berlin Olympics did not take place due to the First World War, the Olympic flag with the rings was waved for the first time in Antwerp in 1920.

"Its shape is symbolic. It represents the five continents united in the Olympic movement; its six colours correspond to those of all the national flags of the world today."

Pierre de Coubertin, 1913 about the flag

Is it now called Olympia, Olympiad or Olympic Games? Perhaps the differentiation of the terms is of little interest to you. But basically it's like when someone confuses retro or re-release in sneaker jargon. A subtle difference that can make you a real nosy person at the next regulars' table. Sports reporter Martin Seidemann explains:

The Olympiad describes the period between two Olympic Games and is normally four years long. The terms Olympia and Olympic Games mean the same thing today, but Olympia is actually the place in Greece that is the birthplace of the Games.
