Kijk Cube Houses
The Rotterdam Cube Apartments have been an architectural phenomenon for 40 years. When you look at them, you are fascinated at first. But afterwards you think: wait, do people really live here? And yes, they do!
Of course there are some … changes … they have to agree to live here. You also have to have a taste for interesting shapes. The flats are three-storey and because the residents may have to adapt your usual way of living a bit, it also says on the website itself: These flats will probably not be the best senior residences, although the stairs keep you fit!
The location is incredible. All the highlights of Rotterdam are in the immediate vicinity: Centre, the train station, the Markthal and the Oude Haven, where the 'White House' is also located.
Markthal
The Martkhal in Rotterdam is a residential and shopping district with its own market area. The quarter was opened on 1 October 2014 by Queen Máxima of the Netherlands. Besides the covered market hall, the complex also includes 228 flats, 4600 square metres of shopping halla and 1600 square metres of horeca (gastro).
The market hall is centrally located and very easy to reach from the main railway station and the city centre. But car drivers are also catered for, as the building has a multi-storey car park with over 1000 parking spaces.
Insider tip: Get a stroopwafel at De goudstroop' - home of the original stroopwafels'.
You can get the stroopwafels here with all kinds of spreads and even toppings on top!
De Oude Haven
The Oude Haven, whose construction began at the end of the 14th century, is located in Rotterdam's Maritime District. With its beautiful historic ships, it has become a hotspot for Rotterdammers to have a drink, eat something or dance.
In summer, the terraces are full until the late hours. Choose, for example, the terrace of 'Noah', which has been named the best cocktail bar in the Netherlands. In Europe's first high-rise building, the 'White House', you'll find the 'Eetcafé Het Witte Huis', where you can drink, eat and snack.
The Maritime District can be visited by metro or train (Blaak station) or, if you really want to experience the Oude Haven, by water taxi.
The Beer Garden Rotterdam
Tucked away in Rotterdam, next to the railway tracks leading to Rotterdam Central Station, is the Rotterdam Beer Garden. We actually stumbled upon it by chance, as you have to know it to find it due to its hidden location.
Inside, however, you immediately feel like you're in a German beer garden only hip (we can say that from experience). There are several seating options available, from tables to stairs.
The stairs connected to the beer garden, which are also used for seating, are actually part of the so-called Luchtsingel. The Luchtsingel is a 390-metre long wooden passenger bridge that connects Rotterdam Centrum with Rotterdam Noord (North).
The bridge was built to attract new spatial development to an area once forgotten. The construction of the bridge took place in six phases, the first in 2012 and the last ending on 20.06.2015 with an official opening ceremony.
The beer garden is currently open from 12.00 to 00.00 seven days a week for BBQ, beer and more.
The 'Wilhelmina Paper'
Dutch Photo Museum
"Visual stories that matter." is the motto of the Netherlands Photo Museum. The museum preserves the Dutch photographic heritage of today and tomorrow. In doing so, the museum collects and displays photographs that reflect the world. In this way, visual stories enrich our own lives.
The Netherlands Photo Museum was founded in 2003 when the Netherlands Photo Institute, the Netherlands Photo Archive and the National Photorestoration Atelier joined forces. Since 2007, the museum has found its home in the former workshop "Las Palmas" on the "Wilhelminapier" in Rotterdam.
Hotel New York
But the Wilhelminapier, where the photo museum is located, has much more to offer. For example, the beautiful Hotel New York, located at the very bottom of the pier. It is a hotel in the former management building of the H.A.L., the Holland-America Line. The doors of the hotel opened in 1993.
Its location was a daring move at the time. Since the famous Erasmus Bridge was not built until 1996, the hotel was late in being directly connected to the centre of Rotterdam. However, before that, the hotel always had a regular water taxi that transported guests and other people.
Fenix Food Factory
The Fenix Food Factory is a kitchen with local products where many entrepreneurs and organisations offer something from their menu. You can sit outside by the water or inside on a rainy day. You don't have to wait to be seated. Just sit at the seat of your choice, scan the QR code on the table and order your food online.
Then you just wait for your food to be delivered or for your number to appear on the control panel! Simple and delicious, with a beautiful view and a great atmosphere.
When will I see you in Rotterdam?
