Salehe Bembury's design for the 2002R 'Water Be The Guide' was inspired by a trip to Havasu Falls in the US state of Arizona. The bright, open mesh was inspired by the sand meeting the saturated waters of Havasu, while the deep teal, hairy suede represents the dramatic energy and moment of the falls. 'Water Be The Guide' represents the idea that everyone needs inspiration to find their way.
Until recently, he spent most of his time in nature in dry climates. These environments attract him with their special colour palettes and colour gradients. There is also a stillness that can only be found in the desert. This is where the idea for 'Peace Be The Journey' came from - read more here.

He continues: "However, the moment I saw Havasu Falls, the energy and aesthetics I was used to changed. The colour palette changed immediately, the stillness became infused with movement and sounds began to present themselves. This introduction of colour palette and contrast in energy provoked me to explore colour, but more specifically, the drastic juxtaposition of cool and warm colours in the same environment. While some of my previous New Balance were inspired by stillness, this 2002 is inspired by movement."
Jesse Williams, probably better known to many as Jackson Avery from the doctor series 'Grey's Anatomy', also stars in the campaign video for Salehe Bembury and New Balance's new 2002R. This is the second time Bembury and Williams have worked together on a video: The two also teamed up for Bembury's first 2002R collaboration in 2020.
Just like its predecessor, the one-minute clip 'Water Be the Guide' is full of silly humour. The video begins by showing a thriving forest and three empty water glasses on a tree stump. Williams then enters the frame from the right. Of course, he has the new 2002Rs on his feet. He is also wearing a Bembury-esque military jacket, tailored trousers and his trademark rolled cap.
While staring into the camera, he pours water into each glass. When they are all half full, he taps each glass with a spoon and a knife. This leads to singer Austin Mahone (wearing Bembury's first 2002R) emerging from the left side of the screen and starting to beatbox. The video ends with a close-up of Williams' face trying to hide a smile. He does not succeed.
