Last Monday, Nike announced that the brand will continue its collaboration with New York artist Tom Sachs. In 2023, Nike put its collaboration with Sachs on pause after a report emerged that the artist was acting unethically in his studio.
Nike says it has reviewed its relationship with Sachs and has decided to resume the collaboration with the release of the Mars Yard 3.0 first on the schedule.
Tom Sachs
Tom Sachs and Nike go way back. Sachs released his first project with Nike in 2012, called the Mars Yard. Over more than a decade, the duo released several projects, with the General Purpose Shoe, which made its debut in 2022, being the latest collaboration.
In 2023, Curbed released a report that revealed that working conditions within Sachs' workplace were dire. The report shared experiences of some employees who described the workplace as cult-like, partly due to the strict studio - diet and fitness regimes and communication guidelines.
According to employees, Sachs would throw objects at them or scold them. In addition, the artist regularly suffered from fits of rage, and references to swastikas had been found in the workplace. These, according to Sachs, who is himself Jewish, were meant to "undermine and reclaim this painful part of Jewish history".
Mars Yard 3.0
Despite these rumors, Nike is continuing its collaboration with Sachs. The brand revealed that it has reviewed its relationship with Sachs and has decided to continue with their projects. At the time of writing, the duo is gearing up for the release of the Mars Yard 3.0. The sneaker will appear at Nike in 2025.
