Nike Brings the Iconic ‘Ultramarine’ Colorway to the Air Max 90

Nike is once again playing with the balance between heritage and innovation. This time, the Air Max 90 receives a striking makeover in a colorway that will immediately ring a bell for many sneakerheads: the ‘Ultramarine’.

While this isn't a direct retro of the Nike Air 180, where the palette originally made its debut, this rendition of the AM90 certainly captures that same nostalgic spirit.

Ultramarine Makes the Leap

In recent years, Nike has frequently delved into its archives, seeking new ways to breathe life into its most beloved colorways. The ‘Ultramarine’, originally made famous by the Nike Air 180 in the early ‘90s, is a prime example. With its crisp combination of white and blue, accented by those signature pink hits, the colorway quickly evolved into a true cult favourite.

Now, this iconic aesthetic is making the transition to the Air Max 90. It’s a bold move; while both silhouettes hail from the same era, they each possess a distinct identity. Nevertheless, Nike has managed to translate the very essence of the ‘Ultramarine’ onto the AM90 silhouette with surprising finesse.

Familiar, yet Different

The foundation of the sneaker stays true to what we know and love: a mix of mesh and leather across a predominantly white upper. For the overlays, Nike has opted for a soft synthetic suede. The blue hues provide that unmistakable ‘Ultramarine’ vibe, while the ‘Solar Red’ accents give the overall design just the right amount of punch.

What stands out is how natural the colourway feels on the Air Max 90. While you might expect it to look forced, it feels as though this combination was always intended for this silhouette. At the same time, purists might find themselves wondering if some palettes shouldn't simply remain ‘untouchable’ within their original silhouette.

Nostalgia vs. Innovation

Releases like this always spark a healthy debate within the community. Is this a savvy way to keep the classics accessible for a new generation? Or is Nike diluting the originality of its most iconic designs?

The fact remains that the sneaker world is in a constant state of flux. By applying celebrated colourways to different models, Nike taps into both nostalgia and innovation. For some, this is exactly what keeps the scene exciting; for others, certain combinations are best left undisturbed.

The Nike Air Max 90 ‘Ultramarine’ is expected to drop in April 2026 and will be available via Nike for a retail price of €150. Be sure to keep an eye on our release page for further updates.
