2020 was the year in which the Olympic Games were to take place in Tokyo. Sneaker brands had some releases ready for the Games, but unfortunately did not drop them because the Games were moved. Nike had not so much inspired these sneakers on the Games, but more on the country and culture in which the Games take place. For example, images of a new colorway on the Nike Air Force 1, called 'Sashiko', have surfaced.
What exactly is Sashiko? Sashiko is a traditional way to reinforce fabric with stitching patterns. It is a tradition that is centuries old and dates back to the 17th century. Although the fabric to be reinforced with small stitches occurs in many Asian cultures, we mainly associate the technique with China and Japan. Nowadays we see the technique back in decorative purposes, such as curtains or cushions. In 2020, we also saw two colorways appear on the Nike SB Dunk Low and SB Zoom Blazer Mid models. Now the technique is also used for the iconic Air Force 1.
Nike Air Force 1 'Sashiko'
The top of the Nike Air Force 1 is processed in traditional white and blue shades. Each panel of the sneaker has its own unique look, which creates a whole patchwork effect. The suede tongue, the Swooshes and the heal tabs are processed in white colours that ensure that the panels are broken open. Red Nike Air branding can be found on the tongue. On the back of the heal tab are golden marks. When we descend to the sole, the white midsole quickly catches the eye. What completes the design is the transparent outsole with marks on it that can be found underneath the midsole.
