Amid all the hybrid silhouettes and leopard prints on sneakers, a new trend seems to be emerging: the addition of zippers to sneakers. This feature first appeared in the 2000s with the Nike Air Max SNDR, which made a comeback two years ago.
Recently, it was announced that the Nike Air Max 95 Zip is returning, and now adidas is also embracing the zip-up feature.
Just unveiled are the official images of the adidas Samba Decon, a design featuring a shroud over the upper that completely covers the lacing system. The sneaker will release in two monochrome colorways: a deep burgundy and a grey.
This isn’t the first adidas sneaker to receive the zip treatment. Last summer, adidas introduced the Megaride S2, which also features a zipper. That sneaker, however, has a more futuristic aesthetic, while the Samba taps into the Y2K trend, which is playing a major role in the fashion scene in 2025.
The Samba undergoes several significant updates, the biggest being the addition of a leather zip overlay over the tongue. The tongue itself has also been redesigned, replacing leather with a performance-oriented synthetic material. The upper is constructed from ripstop fabric, with printed stripes and stitching outlining the signature T-toe design.
It’s not yet clear when exactly adidas will drop the Samba Decon in the ‘Grey’ and ‘Burgundy’ colorways, but the release is expected toward the end of 2025.
