The 'plugs' for stability & recognition value
The Lego brick-like plugs on the side are the unique selling point of the sneakers. Not only do they come in various colour combinations, they also give the upper and sole better cohesion and stability.

With adidas for 17 years and Vice Head of global Design at adidas Originals. Nic Galway brings not only a wealth of experience but also vision to his designs. For example, before designing the NMD silhouette, he worked with Kanye West on the Yeezy line.
Ultraboost Technology
The NMD, just like many other adidas models, features the famous and efficient Ultraboost technology. This extra cushioning was developed in collaboration with BASF.
In this process, granulate is first blasted into approx. 2500 individual cells, which are then pressed together in the next step and formed into a sole. The result is a sole with its own cell structure that dampens and absorbs the energy of each step.
Origin & Inspriation
Nic Galway has insisted that the NMD will not be an evolution of the 'Ultraboost' but its own unique silhouette and line.
The simplicity of the classic three stripes and the 'plugs' finds its origin in adidas Runner models of the 80s:

50 shades of the adidas NMD Black
Ok, we're not presenting 50 different black colorways of the 'Brand with the three stripes' model, but we are presenting some highlights of the dark colorways of the NMD.
A remaster of the 2015 OG#, the adidas NMD_R1 2020 was re-released and is completely inspired by the original, only the stripes stand out a bit more.
The adidas NMD_R1 Primeknit 'Core Black' is even more subtle and integrates the three stripes into the mesh upper. It also provides an outstandingly comfortable feel.
This version adds a gold highlight on the rear plug, adding a touch of glamour to the adidas NMD.
The combination of black & white and the detail in shimmering 'Haze Rose' definitely make this colorway something special.
This 'all black' colorway is a collabo with Pharrell Williams. In general, the NMD has often been used for collaborations with various designers and brands. This version is subtle, clean and a perfect middle ground between street and understated.
