The History of Arc'teryx
Founded in 1989 by local climbers in North Vancouver, Canada, and originally named Rock Solid, Arc’teryx was rebranded in 1991, inspired by the prehistoric bird Archaeopteryx – a symbol of evolution. Their goal was to create innovative gear for alpine conditions. Known for their minimalistic and functional aesthetic, and fine attention to detail, all of Arc’teryx’s gear is tested extensively in the Coast Mountains surrounding their headquarters.
Investing heavily in R&D, Arc’teryx have introduced multiple technologies, materials and innovations over they years that have become industry standards, including:
- The Vapor Harness: introduced in 1993, the Vapor climbing harness using heat-lamination technology for unmatched comfort and weight reduction.
- The Bora Backpack: Featuring a thermoformed, anatomically-shaped back panel, the Bora backpack was launched in 1996 and was a major innovation in backpack design.
- The Alpha SV Jacket: Arc’teryx began producing technical apparel in 1998 and the Alpha SV Jacket was a breakthrough product.

In 1998, Arc’teryx entered into a partnership with GORE-TEX, and the waterproof, windproof and breathable membrane was first applied to the Alpha SV Jacket. Arc’teryx and GORE-TEX have worked together ever since to deliver premium technical performance.
Arc’teryx didn’t launch their first footwear line until 2015, debuting the Bora2 Mid GTX boot with a unique two-layer system. Several distinct technologies were incorporated into the brand’s footwear, including a removable, stretchable inner liner that conforms to the foot, thermo-laminated uppers, Vibram soles, and GORE-TEX liners.
Considered a premium outdoor brand, Arc’teryx is worn not only by elite alpinists and professional adventurers, but is rapidly growing in popularity as a high-end fashion statement.
