NYC-based brand Barriers has drawn inspiration from The North Star on this Converse collab, a 19th-century anti-slavery newspaper that sits comfortably within Barriers’ messages of anti-racism and progress.
The Barriers x Converse Chuck 70 ‘Fiery Red’ (A01786C) is a high-top sneaker constructed from a premium black canvas upper that utilises raw edges and features the mottos ‘Wisdom, Courage, Vision’ and ‘True Power Comes From Within’ embroidered in red thread. A shell takes the place of the usual lace dubrae on multi-coloured red and green laces, ending in a purposely aged rubber toecap, and all sitting upon a pre-worn aged white midsole and gum rubber outsole.
The insoles show a split graphic of three people staring at The Little Dipper constellation, which is a call-back to when escaped slaves would navigate by the North Star to journey home.
The collection also includes the Barriers x Converse Pro Leather ‘Monks Robe’.
