Nike adds a new pair to the Jordan 1 collection and it is combined with a piece of culture. The first images of the Air Jordan 1 Mid 'Siempre Familia' have been released and are inspired by the Mexican holiday 'Día de Muertos'.

Día de Muertos

Dìa de Muertos is Spanish for 'the day of the dead'. This day is considered a holiday of Mexican culture and is also celebrated in Latin America, the United States and the Philippines, among other places.

The tradition takes place every year on 1 and 2 November, when people commemorate their departed friends and relatives. It is believed that on these days, the souls of their deceased loved ones return to earth. Thus, the skull is a common symbol seen on this day.

When preparing for the holiday, the graves of the deceased are cleaned and decorated. Throughout the year, families collect goods to give to the souls of their loved ones. They also prepare food and place it with the goods at the grave as a kind of offering.

The Jordan 1 has an upper made mainly of suede. The pair features a colour scheme where the colours black and red come together, with some yellow and blue accents.

What makes the sneaker so unique is that the silhouette contains a number of important details that represent Mexican culture. The Swoosh on the side of the shoe is depicted as an arrow and bow, which refers to the history of the culture.

The white teeth found on the toebox represent the teeth of the skulls used during Día de Muertos.

The wing logo burned into the side of the shoe is coloured in the same colours as the bow and arrow. On the tongue there is a Jordan tag where the Jumpman logo can be found in red. Below the Jumpman logo is the word 'Familia', the Spanish word for 'family'.

Finally, there are a few animal accents on the model, which refer to the Mexican story of the Jaguar Warriors. The overlays on the mudguard and laces contain a jaguar print. On the side of the heel you can find a black jaguar with a blue stone as an eye.

Unfortunately, the Air Jordan 1 Mid 'Siempre Familia' does not have an exact release date yet, but is most likely expected in 2021. Don't want to miss this release? Check out our release calendar and follow us on Instagram, Facebook and Twitter.
