Last Monday, May 1, 2023, the Met Gala took place. The benefit event, organized by Vogue and the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Costume Institute, is an annual big event. During the event, money is raised for charity and the biggest stars are invited. This year's theme was "Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty," paying tribute to the designer. Cardi B in Chenpeng Studio
Starting of strong. Someone who never misses the mark at the Met Gala is artist Cardi B. Dressed in black and white, Karl Lagerfeld's signature colors, an eye-catching floral pattern on the skirt, and pearls in the ears, Cardi B's outfit screams Lagerfeld, but also has a modern twist. The shirt-neckline paired with the tie completes the outfit.
Anne Hathaway in Versace
Actress Anne Hathaway came dressed in a custom Versace dress that paid tribute to Lagerfeld's work at Chanel. The dress, made of tweed, features gold details, silver pearls, and cut-outs in just the right places. A modern approach to the theme that stays close to the actress' style – that's how you do it at the Met Gala.
Doja Cat as cat Choupette
When the theme for the benefit gala was announced, people quickly wondered who would come dressed as Karl's beloved cat Choupette. The fact that none other than Doja Cat would take on this role surprised no one. The singer came in a dress by Oscar de la Renta. The dress came with a hood with cat ears and had a long, fury drag, but it mainly was the make-up that did it.
Serena Williams announces pregnancy
Tennis star Serena Williams came dressed in a dress by Gucci, but people quickly forgot about that upon seeing her baby belly. Williams, along with her husband Alexis Ohanian, announced her second pregnancy on her Instagram (@serenawilliams) saying, "Was so excited when Anna Wintour invited the 3 of us to the Met Gala. Besides the unveiling of Rihanna's baby bump during the Superbowl earlier this year, the Met Gala might be the best time to announce your pregnancy.
Dua Lipa in vintage Chanel
Dua Lipa did not arrive in just any dress but wore the wedding dress worn by Claudia Schiffer in the 1992 Chanel show. The black and white tweed dress paid tribute to Chanel and Karl Lagerfeld and fit the theme of the evening perfectly. Around her neck, Dua Lipa wore a 225-carat necklace from Tiffany's & Co.
Jared Leto's tribute to cat Choupette
Unlike Doja's subtle hint at Karl's cat Choupette, Jared Leto went all-in. The actor and musician is known for his signature looks at the gala, and his outfit for this edition was no exception. Leto arrived in a life-size catsuit designed by Joshua Balster and reminiscent of a mascot outfit one would wear next to the basketball court. Leto did not keep the outfit on throughout the evening, and under his cat outfit, he wore a black robe with silver details.
The Kardashians
Despite rumors that the well-known Kardashian family would not be invited to this edition of the Met Gala, the stars did appear on the red carpet. Khloé, Kris, and Kourtney were not there this year, why is not known, but Kendall, Kim, and Kylie each appeared in a unique outfit. In some, the theme is more recognizable than in other outfits. Kendall Jenner in Marc Jacobs, Kim Kardashian in Schiaparelli, and Kylie Jenner in Jean Paul Gaultier – perhaps not the best outfits of the evening, but certainly memorable.
Rihanna and A$AP Rocky have arrived
Rihanna is perhaps the most talked about artist when it comes to the Met Gala. The singer packs big every year with unique outfits, and this year is no exception. Rihanna and A$AP Rocky arrived "fashionably late," but were worth the wait. Dressed in Valentino, Riri showed off her baby belly on the red carpet. Flacko was seen in a Bvlgari design with Belperron Jewelry.
Bad Bunny in Jacquemus
Bad Bunny arrived with designer Jacquemus in a white suit designed by Jacquemus himself. The suit came with a long train with a floral pattern. The cut-out on the back of the suit showed off the rapper's back and gave the outfit a modern twist. Bad Bunny is not afraid to go all-in and we love it.
Billie Eilish in Simone Rocha
Singer Billie Eilish appeared on the red carpet together with her brother Finneas O'Connell. Billie came dressed in a dress by Simone Rocha, paired with jewelry by Cartier, and gave a goth-inspired Karl Lagerfeld look. Finneas wore a trench coat by Cartier and jewelry by Vivenne Westwood. The hint of the theme is far from obvious in Finneas' look for us, but that's entirely besides the point.
Lil Nas X in a glitter string
We wrap up the most memorable outfits of the 2023 Met Gala with Lil Nas X's look. The rapper is known for his daring looks, but this year he went pretty far. Lil Nas X's outfit consisted of a thong and thousands of glitters. The look took about twelve hours to get finished. Twelve hours that could have been better spent in many ways. A daring look, that's for sure, but it's a no from us (and most likely from Karl as well).
