Nike always comes up with crazy new ideas for their sneakers. This time, the Air Max 90 is inspired by the Japanese convenience store snack, the Onigiri. Onigiri are rice balls made from seasoned rice and a number of different fillings, wrapped in seaweed. They often come in a triangular shape. Read more about the Air Max 90 'Rice Ball' below.
About the Air Max 90
In 1987, Nike had a big impact with the Air Max 1. This was the first time a visible Air Unit was seen on a sneaker. The shoe was inspired by the Centre Pompidou, a building in Paris where all the pipes can be seen on the outside of the building.
Due to the success of the Air Max 1, the Air Max series was continued and Nike released the Air Max 90 in 1990, where the sneaker then went by the name Air Max III. The Air Unit was made even more visible by a colored part around the area.
The first colorway that came on the sneaker was the 'Infrared' colorway. Here, black, white and grey colours were combined with a bright red colour. To this day, the 'Infrared' is still a favourite with many.

The Air Max 90 'Rice Ball' has been completely transformed into an Onigiri. The upper has largely been given a seaweed black colour. In addition, the eyelets have a dull white colour and thus represent the rice. A more striking blue colour has been used for the Swoosh, outsole and area around the Air Unit.
Another nice detail that has been used on the sneaker is the pull tab on the tongue. This represents the way you opening the snack (with a strip). On the insole there is an image of rice placed with the Nike logo in blue.
The release date is unfortunately still unknown for the Air Max 90 'Rice Ball', but we can expect the sneaker at Nike sometime in the coming weeks. Do you want to stay up to date with the latest releases, sneaker news and shock drops? Then download our app. Check out the images below.
