A new Nike lawsuit is on the horizon, this time against none other than Edison Chen, the mastermind behind the Chinese label CLOT. The brand previously collaborated with Nike before teaming up with adidas. Nike has filed a lawsuit against the company for breach of contract, demanding $126,615.68 for “goods and services” provided.
Nike vs. CLOT
The lawsuit comes more than a year after Chen ended his partnership with Nike to work with adidas on releases such as the Silk Gazelle and the Superstar, which hit stores in recent months. CLOT had been collaborating with Nike since 2006, but in 2023 switched to Nike’s biggest competitor.
This is exactly what the lawsuit is about. The complaint is part of Nike’s broader legal offensive against (former) partners and designers, shortly after settling with sneaker customizer Shoe Surgeon, who was sued in 2024 for copying designs and using the Nike brand.
BAPE was also recently taken to court for similar reasons, particularly regarding the BAPE STA. As with Shoe Surgeon, that case ended in a settlement, and NIGO, BAPE’s founder, has even gone on to collaborate with Nike again.
How things will play out for Edison Chen remains to be seen. The designer has not yet officially responded to the lawsuit, although his most recent Instagram post, showing him wearing a CLOT x adidas sneaker with the caption “WORD!?”, might be a subtle jab.
