The adidas AM4 (adidas Made for) series represents a bold leap in sneaker innovation, merging advanced manufacturing with hyper-local customisation.
Launched in 2017, the AM4 project was the first global initiative from adidas's Speedfactory, a state-of-the-art facility in Ansbach, Germany, designed to produce footwear using robotics, 3D printing, and digital knitting. This approach allowed adidas to create city-specific models (such as AM4LDN for London, AM4NYC for New York, and AM4TKY for Tokyo) each tailored to the unique running conditions and preferences of local athletes.
Each AM4 sneaker features a full-length Boost midsole for responsive cushioning, a Primeknit upper for a lightweight, sock-like fit, and a floating Torsion bar that enhances stability and flexibility. The shoes are assembled without glue, using a minimal number of components, which not only streamlines production but also reduces environmental impact. The design process was data-driven, incorporating insights from local runners to ensure optimal performance and comfort.
