HOKA Sneakers
Hoka One One (pronounced Hoe-Kah O-nay O-nay) is a Māori phrase that means “to fly over the earth”, which is what HOKA sneakers are designed to do. Lightweight, cushioned and with an almost comically oversized sole for stability, HOKA sneakers provide a smooth ride – almost like ‘flying’.
Founded in Annecy, France, in 2009 by Nicolas Mermoud and Jean-Luc Diard, both previously of Salomon, HOKA originated because of the need of a shoe for rugged mountain races in places like the Alps, and that would allow people to run faster downhill. The oversized outsole provided more cushioning than other running sneakers on the market at the time, and due to its enhanced comfort, stability, and lightweight build, it became popular with runners very quickly.
Gaining visibility by sponsoring top trail runners Dave Mackey and Karl Meltzer, the wide body design was based on the concept of the successful oversized technology used in powder skis and mountain bike tires. The carefully designed midsole works together with the enhanced cushioning to provide a smooth and efficient stride, helping runners to adapt to any surface at any pace. Meta-Rocker technology ensures the height difference between the heel and the ball of the foot is minimal, helping propel you forward, and J-Frame tech in the inner adds stability by helping prevent your foot rolling inward.
Deckers Outdoor Corporation purchased the company in 2013.
Generally, HOKA sneakers fit a little small, so it’s recommended to go up by half a size.
