adidas Originals is taking a big step into the NFT (non-fungible token) world, coming up with a 'Virtual Gear' NFT collection. In this collection, NFT holders can add virtual wearables to their wallet. With this virtual collection, adidas wants to aim to strengthen its community-based, member-first, open metaverse strategy.
Virtual wearables
The adidas Orignals 'Virtual Gear' NFT collection consists of 16 virtual items. These clothing items can be added by NFT holders to their wallet via adidas' metaverse. The items can be worn by the virtual avatars within the adidas metaverse. The items can adapt to different environments within the metaverse. In this way, adidas is pushing the boundaries within Web3.
According to Erika Wykes-Sneyd, VP adidas, this collection is a step in a new direction: "We are setting a milestone in this new era of originality - one that unquestionably serves the community, heroes the purveyors and collectors of emerging style and culture, benefits the value creators, and supports the diversity of expression and utility that the blurring of virtual worlds has allowed us all to explore."
The 'Virtual Gear' collection comes with forward-thinking designs including the 'C2172', 'SPACE CRYSTAL', 'WALLRUNNER' and the 'P.F.D. - Personal Flotation Device'. The items hint at the iconic silhouettes of adidas Orignals and show what is possible within the online metaverse.
The adidas Originals 'Virtual Gear' collection was released on 16 November 2022. Owners of the adidas Originals: Capsule NFT Collection, which was released in May 2022, can appropriate items from the 'Virtual Gear' collection by 'burning' their current NFT collection to make way for the new collection. The virtual collection will also be available through marketplaces.
