Japanese designer Rei Kawakubo started designing clothes in 1969 under the name Comme des Garçons, which means "like the boys". Four years later, she officially founded the brand and worked mainly in Tokyo. In the first few years, the clothing line consisted only of women's clothing, but in 1978 Kawakubo began designing men's clothing as well.
The style of the Japanese brand can be described as playful and colourful. In 2002, the Comme des Garçons collection "Play" was released. This collection featured the famous red heart logo for the first time.
The logo was designed by Polish designer Filip Pagowski and has since become a symbol for the brand. This heart is also what makes the Converse collection so popular.
The collaboration between Converse and Comme des Garçons began in 2009, with the first model featuring CDG's iconic red heart printed on the side of the Chuck Taylor. The silhouette released in 2009 had a slightly different design than the currently very popular pairs.
The heart was much smaller and the sneaker had a minimalist look. Nevertheless, the model with the red heart left a strong impression and so Converse collaborated with Comme des Garçons again a few years later.
Converse x Comme des Garçons Play
After several collaborations with brands like Vans and Nike, the first collection of the Comme des Garçons Play x Converse Chuck 70 was released in 2015. Compared to the previous model from 2009, the updated Chuck 70 abandons the minimalist look. The red heart on the side has been enlarged and covers a large part of the midsection in the current model.
The silhouettes have become classics since 2015 and it's hard to imagine the sneaker world without them. The Chucks originally came in white and black, as you can now get them again in the restock.
In recent years, different colours have been added to the collection, and the logos on the Chucks have also been given different variations.
Comme des Garçons Play x Converse Chuck 70 Restock
As a reminder, the Converse x Comme des Garçons Play will once again be available at Converse on 23 September 2021. Both the high and low top models will be reissued in black and white.
The sneakers feature the red "Play" heart on the sides and the insole features the Converse and CDG logo. The midsole of the styles is cream coloured and the outsole is brown coloured.
